Non-medical Professional Licenses
We have counseled and defended attorneys before the Attorney Registration & Disciplinary Commission; and a wide range of professionals before the Illinois departments of Financial and Professional Regulation, Human Rights, Public Aid, and Children and Family Services. Some examples:
- We have represented attorneys in complex litigation before ARDC involving client fund account and billing violations.
- We assisted a client in appealing and successfully blocking new legislation supported by a professional association that was trying to put a class of competitors out of business. We counseled the association and drafted the legislation.
- We recently successfully represented a large real estate agency against accusations of racial discrimination at the Illinois Department of Human Rights. Mr. Levens was formerly the chairman of the Fair Housing Board and Human Relations Commission in Springfield, Illinois.
- When the Illinois General Assembly passed legislation requiring that African hair braiders become licensed as cosmetologists, the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation began serving cease-and-desist orders on hair braiding shops. We incorporated and represented the Illinois African Hair Braiders Association and successfully persuaded IDFPR to stay enforcement of this new law to give the association time to lobby for a fair and equitable way to treat this subclass of professionals.
- An established business was slow to pay its liability insurance premium, so its insurance agent advanced the premium even though it meant temporarily commingling escrow funds. Meanwhile, the business closed and never paid the agent, leaving him short. The Division of Insurance charged the agent but quick and creative thinking saved the agent’s license.
If you are an attorney, realtor, architect, cpa or other non-medical professional, or a business in need of corporate or litigation representation, you can trust Augustine, Kern and Levens, Ltd., to provide you with a realistic, credible evaluation of your case, and creative, forceful representation.
Corporate Representation and Commercial Litigation
We represent more than 100 small corporations in corporate matters large and small, and have represented large banks and mortgage brokerages, and small businesses such as plumbing and electrical contractors, in maintaining corporate formalities, commercial litigation, and even some union issues. For example, we recently represented the manager of a posh Michigan Avenue specialty shop in an asset purchase from the owners, incorporated the new company, and defended it against an onslaught of creditors of the former owners.
